In a society where the voices of Black women are not always heard or listened to, more and more women of color are creating the platforms necessary to shine light on our opinions, challenges and successes. What started out as a natural friendship for Mandi Wooddruff and Tiffany Aliche has turned out to be a successful and purposeful partnership. The two financial experts teamed up to launch the Brown Ambition Podcast in fall of 2015, a weekly show on which they discuss everything from finances, politics, entertainment and social issues—from the perspectives of women of color.
Mandi Woodruff, a graduate of Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia, has been reporting on finance and business for over five years. She discusses growing up in a household where money was viewed in a negative light. After being laid off at age 22 without any money in savings, Mandi decided to invest her time and energy into learning more about finances. She now works at Yahoo Finance, where she hosts the weekly web series “Money Minute.” Her series covers just about any topic having to do with money matters. Tiffany Aliche, better known as The Budgetnista, started out as a school teacher before embarking on a career in finance. Shortly after being laid off from a teaching position, she made the decision to create a living teaching others how to better their finances. Having grown up in a household where finances were strongly emphasized, she began by sharing her knowledge with family and friends and became the go-to girl for finances. Since then she has become a best-selling author of “The One-Week Budget” and an award-winning financial educator.
The two took some time out of their schedule to speak with AFIYA Magazine about how their show came to be and why these topics need to be discussed.
